An internal postfix mail server is set up. You can send emails to anybody in the server. The accounts are set with the user name, so if you want to send an email to someone you can also avoid the "@aperture" bit.
Do bear in mind that this server is internal. It will reject any outbound and inbound emails to the internet. So, no, you cannot forward your local email to your gmail account (yet).
Use the mutt command to open a mail client. The gui is intuitive.
